Bopomo, the Taiwan Mandarin app.

## What it is

Bopomo is an iPhone app for learning to speak Taiwanese Mandarin. You say each line out loud to an AI tutor who answers what you actually said, on a trip around Taiwan that starts in Hualien. Reading zhuyin (bopomofo) is part of the same path, between the speaking lessons, and the alphabet lessons are free.

The app isn't on the App Store yet. It's in testing, and you can [join the waitlist](https://bo-pomo.com/#join-top) to hear the day it launches. The [free tools](https://bo-pomo.com/tools) and [guides](https://bo-pomo.com/learn-taiwanese-mandarin) on this site work in any browser now.

## Why it exists

Most Mandarin apps teach the Mandarin of mainland China: simplified characters, pinyin and a Beijing accent. Taiwan writes traditional characters, children learn to read with zhuyin, and people sound different. If you're moving to Taiwan, visiting, or talking with family there, those apps teach you a version you then have to unlearn. Bopomo teaches the Taiwan one from the first lesson.

## Who makes it

Bopomo is made by Hubera Ltd, a company in London, and its founder, Hulusi Tunç, who is learning Mandarin himself.
