How to type it
- Tone numbers after each syllable:
ni3 hao3,xie4xie5. 5 or 0 is the neutral tone. - Tone marks as you'd see them in a book:
nǐ hǎo. A syllable with no mark among marked ones is neutral, as inxièxie. - ü as ü, v or u: (
lv4,nu:3). After j, q, x and y it's written u, and the converter knows:ju2is ㄐㄩˊ. - Words run together are split the way pinyin spells them:
fanganis fan gan, andfang'anwith an apostrophe is fang an. - Zhuyin with the neutral dot before the syllable, Taiwan's way (˙ㄇㄚ), or after it. No phone keyboard for it? Use the sign keys that appear in zhuyin mode.
It converts sounds, not characters: type 你好 and it can't know which reading you mean. For the sounds of a character, look it up in a dictionary such as the Ministry of Education's 國語辭典, which gives the Taiwan reading in zhuyin.

The rules behind the table
- zhi, chi, shi, ri, zi, ci and si are the initial alone in zhuyin: ㄓ ㄔ ㄕ ㄖ ㄗ ㄘ ㄙ.
- bo, po, mo, fo are ㄅㄛ ㄆㄛ ㄇㄛ ㄈㄛ, without ㄨ. Everywhere else uo is ㄨㄛ.
- iu is ㄧㄡ, ui is ㄨㄟ, un is ㄨㄣ (ㄩㄣ after j, q, x), ong is ㄨㄥ and iong is ㄩㄥ.
- Tones go after the signs: ˊ second, ˇ third, ˋ fourth, nothing for the first. The neutral dot ˙ goes before.
The 37 signs take about a week. The zhuyin trainer starts you off, and in the Bopomo app every word you learn shows its zhuyin until you don't need it. Join the waitlist.
Questions
What's the difference between pinyin and zhuyin?
They write the same sounds. Pinyin uses Latin letters and is used in mainland China and most textbooks; zhuyin (bopomofo) uses 37 signs of its own and is what Taiwan teaches and types with.
Is the conversion always exact?
For sounds, yes: every Mandarin syllable has one spelling in each system, and this converter looks each one up in a table instead of guessing. What it can't do is choose a character's reading for you, because it doesn't read characters.
Why is the neutral tone dot before the syllable?
That's how Taiwan's textbooks and dictionaries write it: ˙ㄇㄚ in 媽媽 (ㄇㄚ ˙ㄇㄚ). The converter also reads it after the syllable, as some fonts and apps put it.
Does it handle erhua, like nǎr?
Yes. A final r that isn't its own syllable becomes ㄦ added to the syllable: nar3 is ㄋㄚˇㄦ.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The conversion happens on your device, and nothing you type leaves the page.
